A Morning Routine for Women Over 50 That Fits the Life You Actually Have

No 4:30 alarm. No cold plunge. Ten minutes that belong to you before the world gets its hands on you.

A note from Grace

For most of my life, the first hour of the day went to the commute, the 7:30 meeting, lunches, a missing shoe and whoever needed a ride. I got very good at mornings. I just never had one.

Maybe the kids need less from you now. Maybe the job is changing, or you are. Either way, there's a window at the start of the day that didn't used to be there. Here's the simplest way I know to keep it.

The 10-minute version

  1. Threshold (1 minute). Before your feet touch the floor, say thank you for one specific thing.
  2. Pour Out (5 minutes). Write whatever is in your head, longhand, without editing it.
  3. Direct (1 minute). Write one intention for the day. Make it about how you want to be, not what you have to get done.
  4. Move (3 minutes). Stretch, walk, dance in the kitchen. Anything that reminds your body it belongs to you.

The whole time, the phone stays where it is. The world can wait ten minutes.

On a hard morning

A thank-you, the phone left alone and one sentence of intention. That's about ninety seconds, and it still counts.

What I no longer do before 8 a.m.

  • Check email "just to see."
  • Read the news before I've heard my own thoughts.
  • Answer a text that isn't an emergency.
  • Solve a problem that isn't mine.
  • Hurry.

If your mornings run later, move the line. What matters is that there is one.
